Professor Hopkins also conducts Safety Culture Reviews to examine aspects of the culture and functioning of organizations. The aim is not to provide an overall assessment but to identify areas where improvement is possible, and so to make recommendations for improvement. The method is to interview a cross section of staff, in small groups, in some sort of interview room, as well as to inspect the site and talk informally to people on the job. Professor Hopkins would also want to examine the organization’s incident reporting system and talk to people most closely associated with it. Prior to commencing the review, he needs to be sent copies of two or three significant incident investigation reports so that they could be followed up on site. The details of the review are worked out directly with the client, beforehand. The final review would be provided as a written report. Organisations that have commissioned Safety Culture Reviews by Professor Hopkins include Woodside Petroleum and separately for Woodside’s partner, Transfield-Worley, two of BHP Billiton’s sites and for the coal mining company, Xstrata.
